Kathryn Woodard is available to present these workshops to student groups and teachers:
Rapid Interventions for Retraining Movement
First presented at the Austrian Society for Music and Medicine Symposium (2024) this workshop gives participants tools they can quickly incorporate into their teaching. It provides insight into common habits we encounter regularly with students and tackles them from perspectives informed by anatomy and body awareness techniques.
An Introduction to Irregular Meters: Examples from the Repertoire and Teaching Tips
From her decades-long research of piano music from Turkey, Kathryn has some real gems to share that are attractive to students. She provides background as to why these rhythms are so prevalent in certain regions and discusses works beyond these regions that inspire and challenge students of all levels.
Heightening Multi-Sensory Awareness with Students
Playing the piano is a complex dance of looking, listening and navigating across 88 keys. In this workshop Kathryn discusses pitfalls students can encounter when they neglect any one aspect of the dance and how to build a multi-sensory approach to learning.
Understanding Entrainment as an Essential Skill for Teaching
We all know what it’s like to work with students who learn like we did. Whether you primarily play by ear or are a fantastic reader, it’s easiest to work with students who share our approach to learning. But what about when the skills don’t seem to intersect and you aren’t able to reach a certain student when you suspect they have ability? Kathryn tackles this issue from the perspective of entrainment - the process of guiding another to a particular outcome. This can be as basic as clapping and modeling a rhythm while a student joins in or as complex as finding that particular mindset or wavelength that motivates a student to the next level.
