New Music Initiative Explores Cross-Cultural Exchange
Sonic Crossroads is a music initiative created to explore cross-cultural exchange in music and the processes of musical globalization. Sonic Crossroads offers concerts with guest artists from around the globe, workshops in performance and composition, symposia on historical and contemporary musical exchange, and a commissioning and recording program to promote new works by emerging composers, arrangers and performers. Educational outreach is central to the mission of Sonic Crossroads with the aim of building audiences for both new music and traditional music and intersections between the two.
Director Kathryn Woodard and the collaborating musicians of Sonic Crossroads bring extensive experience to the realms of sonic experimentation and musical exchange. As part of the initiative’s educational outreach, the performers and composers offer lecture-demonstrations at the concerts in order to broaden the audience’s appreciation of current and historical trends in music. The inaugural 2007-2008 concert series presented chamber and piano solo recitals. The program “Caucasian Sketches” juxtaposes works by composers from the Caucasus region, including an arrangement of one movement from Ippolitov-Ivanov’s Caucasian Sketches that he composed while living in Georgia. The program “Between Tides” features music of Japan including works that combine Japanese and Western instruments.
Plans for 2008-2009 include collaborations with Masayo Ishigure, prominent koto player who recorded the sound track to Memoirs of a Geisha with Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma; with Min Xiao-Fen, renowned pipa player of China, in a new multimedia production “Stories from Nanjing”; and with guest ensembles for whom Kathryn Woodard serves as concert moderator.
